SING & PLAY

Melissa teaches piano and voice privately in her home in Kew Gardens, NY. Melissa holds a B.F.A. in Theatre from New York University- Tisch School of the Arts, where she specialized in musical theatre at CAP 21 studios. A member of the New York Singing Teachers Association, she has been studying voice and piano for over 30 years. She has studied with many amazing teachers including Broadway performer Alix Korey, and director, Jack Lee. Melissa has performed in theatres across the country from New Hampshire to Ohio and many productions here in NYC.

Specializing in musical theatre, she teaches her students how to perform the song while learning proper technique. She also encourages sound vocal pedagogy based upon the best-known scientific and artistic principles. She strives to improve skills and confidence, as well as build knowledge about the entertainment business. Throughout the year she works on musical theatre and contemporary songs for performing, while teaching proper form and breath control. She strives to instill her students with a life long passion for music, the courage to take chances and to trust themselves, their talent, and their voices.

In each lesson we will work on building a wide vocal range using vocal exercises and unique "tools".

We will work on strengthening your “break” between what is commonly known as your head voice and chest voice. There is a strong emphasis on breath control, proper support, ear training, and performing the song.  We will also build an audition book with varius styles represented, as well as preparing for the audition from beginning to end with the proper music cuts and arrangements.  Each lesson varies between 30, 45 and 60 minute sessions, depending on what level and age the student is.

Every Fall each voice student will record their own Holiday CD, this process is also a wonderful way for them to learn the ins and outs of recording, and the detail and practice required to come out with a finished track.

Each month each piano student will learn about and study a piece written by a different composer.  The Composer of the Month series is designed to introduce each student to the wide range of composers and music, as well as give them a brief overview of the history of music, as well as where in the world the music was created.

Each year there is an end of the year Recital in June, held at a local venue, providing the children a chance to show off all they have accomplished and their many talents.  This is usually an exciting event for both the children and the parents.  Each student receives and award for their excellence in music achievement, and the show is always follwed by a small reception where we can celebrate the children's triumphs.
